Aftercare Guide Resin and Epoxy

Simple routines that keep a resin driveway or epoxy floor looking sharp for years, plus the few things to avoid.

The short answer

Keep it clean and keep grit off it. A resin driveway needs little more than a regular sweep and an occasional wash. An epoxy floor needs sweeping or dust mopping and a wash with a pH-neutral cleaner.

Deal with oil, fuel and chemical spills promptly, and avoid sharp metal tools and very high heat on either surface.

The first few days

Resin and epoxy both need time to cure. Curing time depends on the product, the temperature and the weather, so we will tell you on the day when you can walk on the surface, when you can drive or park on it and when it can take full use. Until then, keep people, pets and vehicles off it.

For the first week or so on a new driveway, avoid turning the steering wheel while the car is stationary, as this can scuff a fresh surface.

Resin driveway care

  • Sweep regularly with a stiff brush to clear leaves, soil and grit.
  • Wash it down a few times a year with warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse.
  • Pressure washing is fine for most resin bound surfaces if you use a fan nozzle, keep the lance moving and hold it back from the surface. Avoid a pin-point jet.
  • Wipe up oil and fuel quickly with absorbent paper or cat litter, then wash the area. Leaving spills can stain any driveway.
  • Weeds and moss do not grow up through resin bound, but seeds can take root in dirt that builds up on the surface, especially in shady corners. Regular sweeping prevents it.

Winter care

  • Use a plastic snow shovel rather than a metal one.
  • If you use a de-icer, choose one that is suitable for resin surfaces and rinse the residue off once the cold spell has passed.
  • Clear standing leaves and debris before winter so water can drain freely.

Epoxy floor care

  • Sweep or dust mop often. Grit underfoot is the main cause of fine scratches on a gloss finish.
  • Wash with a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft mop. Avoid harsh acids, strong solvents and abrasive pads unless your installer has said they are suitable.
  • Put mats at entrances to catch grit before it reaches the floor.
  • Fit felt pads to furniture and use boards under jacks, stands and heavy equipment.
  • Clean spills promptly, particularly oil, brake fluid and chemicals in garages and workshops.

Industrial floors

Busy commercial and industrial floors last longest with a planned cleaning routine. A scrubber dryer with pads that suit the coating keeps the surface clean without dulling it, and anti-slip finishes need regular cleaning so the texture keeps working. Keep an eye on high-traffic areas, loading points and line markings, and get worn areas looked at early. A maintenance coat applied in good time is far simpler than a full repair later.

Things to avoid

  • Metal shovels, spades and scrapers dragged across the surface
  • Barbecues, fire pits, dropped cigarettes and hot exhausts sitting on the surface
  • Skips, scaffold and heavy plant without boards to spread the load
  • Motorbike side stands and jack points straight on a fresh surface
  • Strong solvents, paint stripper and undiluted bleach
